Here he contrasts stars that shine like a far away escape in the night sky with a warmly lit inviting café. It also shows his eagerness to experiment: both with the stars (this is the first time they appear in this style) and the range of color seen in the night.

In a letter to his sister he states:
"... here there is a night picture without any black, nothing but beautiful blue and violet and green, and in those surroundings the lighted square is colored sulphur yellow and limey green."
